We visited on of Austin’s iconic landmarks, the Broken Spoke, for a friends birthday Friday night and I have to say, it was a lot of fun! Although I didn’t have any boots to dust off ( I wore heels), I could still boogie with the best of them, well sort of. Jake Hooker and his band played and the place was packed. If you’ve never been, it’s an experience all in itself. The place looks like it hasn’t been touched since it first opened in 1964. The wood planked floor sinks underfoot as if it’s about to give out at any moment. Neon lights promoting beer’s finest illuminate the tables that surround the dance floor. James White, the well-known, well-like owner was there to greet us (well everyone) and was too sweet for words. I’ve lived in Austin almost all my life and have only been to the Spoke a handful of times. While it won’t become a regular hotspot of mine, if I ever have the urge to experience what most people think true Texas living is, I know just the place to visit!
